Documentary Film and Diversity
This Praxis Lab explored the power of documentary filmmaking as a tool for amplifying marginalized voices and addressing social issues. Students gained hands-on experience in the fundamentals of documentary analysis and production, including cinematography, interviewing techniques, lighting, scripting, editing, and logging.
Working in small teams, students collaborated with members of the Salt Lake City community to create films that highlight diverse and pressing social topics, including autism, domestic violence, downwinders, art and activism, eating disorders, and the work of artist Ruby Chacón. Through this immersive process, students not only honed their technical filmmaking skills but also engaged deeply with the ethical and creative responsibilities of storytelling.
