Honoring a Legacy of Learning: The Sweet Candy Company’s Impact on Students and Faculty

For more than three decades, the Sweet Candy Company has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to education through its support of the University of Utah’s Honors College. This year, we proudly celebrate a milestone: the awarding of the 101st Sweet Candy Company Endowed Scholarship, a testament to the lasting impact of their generosity.

The Sweet family’s tradition of philanthropy is rooted in the values of Corinne Sweet, who believed deeply in the power of education to transform lives. In 1988, after a conversation with then-University President Chase Peterson, Corinne and her husband, Jack, were inspired to invest in the future of Honors students. Their initial $350,000 gift established the Sweet Candy Company Honors Program Endowment, providing scholarships for undergraduate students who exhibit strong character, intellectual curiosity, and a commitment to learning.

Since then, this endowment has provided life-changing opportunities for eight students each year, empowering them to explore their academic passions, engage in meaningful research, and pursue leadership roles. In addition to supporting students, the endowment also funds an annual faculty award for excellence in teaching, recognizing outstanding educators who inspire and challenge Honors students.

For Rachel Sweet, MBA ’98, continuing her family’s legacy of supporting the Honors College is both a privilege and a responsibility. “One hundred and one scholarships—that’s quite a feat,” Rachel says. “Higher education should be a right, not a privilege. The students in the Honors College give me hope for the future. Many are the first in their families to attend college, and they are learning to collaborate, think critically, and tackle the world’s most pressing challenges. If our support helps make that possible, we’re honored to do it.”

The Honors College is deeply grateful for the Sweet Candy Company’s generosity, which has helped shape the experiences and futures of so many students. As we celebrate this milestone, we recognize that investments like these not only support individual students but also strengthen our broader community—creating a ripple effect that will be felt for generations to come.

Thank you, Sweet Candy Company, for believing in the power of education and the potential of our students.
