Scholarships


Honors College scholarship applications open for the 2024 to 2025 academic year on January 20, 2024. Please find scholarship opportunities listed below and the designated due dates. Some opportunities are awarded on a rolling basis if a due date is not currently listed. Applicants must be Honors students who will enroll full-time (12 credits) at the University of Utah and will pursue completion of the Honors degree. To apply for Honors scholarship opportunities, review all requirements to ensure you qualify and complete the University of Utah General Scholarship application (links provided below). Recipients should note, all scholarships for current students are distributed over a period of two semesters and will be deposited directly to the student’s tuition account.

Benjamin Caine Honors Scholarship

Award: One Award in the amount of $5,000 (no cash award received)

Applications Accepted: January 20 - April 7

Established by Benjamin Caine, a recent graduate of the Honors College (2019). Ben is passionate about the educational value and professional acceleration provided by the Honors College. This scholarship is aimed at first-generation students, regardless of year, with demonstrated academic performance and intention to complete their honors thesis. Preference (not required) is given to students pursuing a career in business, politics, or international relations with an interest in future graduate education. Funding can be used for tuition or Honors housing.

C. Charles Hetzel III Endowed Scholarship

Award: One award in the amount of $12,000 (tuition-based– no cash award received)

Applications Accepted: January 20 - March 15

Established by C. Charles Hetzel III, as a way to provide educational assistance through scholarship. Preference will be given to a U. S. citizen, who is a deserving nonresident student, enrolled in the Honors College and who demonstrates high academic achievement.

Charles W. and Sharee Sorenson Honors Scholarship

Award: One award in the amount of $1,000 (no cash award received)

Students who apply for Honors housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

Established by Charles W. Sorenson, Jr., a graduate of the Honors College, and his wife Sharee Sorenson. Charles and Sharee are committed to making it possible for students to be part of an enriched Honors College experience. This scholarship is eligible for a first-year student who shows commitment to completing an Honors Degree and is renewable each year for up to four years, with increased support each year. Funding can be used for tuition or Honors housing.

Clara And Olivia Randall Housing Scholarship

Award: One award in the amount of $7,500 (Honors housing on campus required; no cash award received)

Students who apply for Honors housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

Established by President Taylor Randall, and his daughters, Clara and Olivia, who are all graduates of the Honors College. Clara and Olivia are passionate about the enriched environment Honors housing communities provide to the Honors experience. This scholarship will provide housing assistance to one student who is living in Honors housing.

Darke Honors Essay Award

Award: One award in the amount of $1,000 (tuition-based; no cash award received)

Applications Accepted: January 20 - April 7

The Darke Honors Essay Award was established in honor of Roy A. Darke, Associate Clinical Professor of psychiatry at the University of Utah, School of Medicine. Recipients must be a rising junior or senior Honors student majoring in psychology. Students wishing to be considered for this award will write a brief essay addressing the following prompt: “Discuss the relationship between medicine and either the behavioral sciences or humanities”.

Duane Harris Butcher Endowed Scholarship

Award: One award in the amount of $600 (tuition-based; no cash award received)

Applications Accepted: January 20 - March 15

The Duane Harris Butcher Scholarship, established in 2002 by Bethann Butcher Martin, is for students in the Honors College who are descendants of the Utah pioneers who emigrated from 1847-1897. Applicants will demonstrate appreciation for their heritage and community through a one-page essay. Photos or additional materials supporting your relationship with Utah pioneers are welcomed and encouraged. Students must be active participants within the Honors College.

Florence J. Gillmor Foundation Housing Scholarships

Students who apply for Honors housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

Established by the Florence J. Gillmor Foundation, whose generous funding for student housing provides the opportunity for students who have earned their place in Honors to broaden their education by fully immersing themselves in Honors and University communities. This scholarship fund will provide housing assistance to ten first-generation students in their first year, who are living in Honors College housing.

Gordon and Connie Hanks Scholarship

Award: One Award in the amount of $2,500 (tuition-based; no cash award received)

Applications Accepted: January 20 - April 7

Gordon and Connie Hanks have been involved in the University of Utah since Gordon’s graduation in 1967. Gordon and Connie have been involved in the College of Fine Arts, the College of Music, and the Athletic Department, providing scholarships and other support. They also have created and grown the JazzSLC/GAM Foundation, a nonprofit Jazz series in Salt Lake City. Connie is an active member of the National Honors Advisory Board. Gordon and Connie generously created an Honors College Scholarship fund in 2021. Applicants must be a rising junior or senior, majoring in Fine Arts, and demonstrate commitment to attaining the Honors degree with high academic standing.

Honors Housing Scholarship - Anonymous Funder

Award: One award in the amount of $5,000 (Honors housing on campus required; no cash award received)

Students who apply for Honors housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

Established by a generous, anonymous donor. This funding will provide scholarship housing assistance to one first-generation student, in their first year, who is living in Honors housing.

Honors College Pride Scholarship

Award: One award in the amount of $1,400 (tuition-based; no cash award received)

Applications Accepted: January 20 - March 15

The Honors College Pride Scholarship established in 2019 is to be awarded to a student studying in either Humanities or Social and Behavioral Science. Preference will be given to students with a demonstrated commitment to the LGBTQ community or who have demonstrated a commitment to social justice and an ambition to work for equality.

James B. & Betty Debenham Scholarship

Award: Two awards in the amount of $2,500 per student (tuition-based; no cash award received)

Applications Accepted: January 20 - March 15

A generous gift from the trust of Betty Debenham established this scholarship in honor of James B. Debenham for rising juniors and seniors who are completing the Honors degree. Applicants must demonstrate participation in the Honors College and provide a plan of their desired thesis topic or attach the thesis proposal form.

James L. Clayton Honors Housing Scholarship

Award: One award in the amount of $5,000 (Honors housing on campus required; no cash award received)

Students who apply for Honors housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

Established by Kitty Swenson in honor of her father, James L. Clayton, who was the second Director of the Honors College, as well as Dean of the Graduate School, and University Provost. This scholarship fund will provide housing assistance to one first-generation student, in their first year, who is living in Honors housing.

James Svendsen Endowed Scholarship

Award: One scholarship in the amount of $1,000 (tuition-based; no cash award received)

Applications Accepted: January 20 - April 7

Established by James Svendsen, this scholarship is for an Honors College junior or senior, pursuing a degree in Theater or the Classics. James Svendsen is a Professor Emeritus in the Classics at the University of Utah, and enjoyed teaching and working with Honors College students.

Janice R. Ugaki And R. Douglas Greally Outstanding Honors Student Scholarship

Award: One award in the amount of $1,000 (tuition-based; no cash award received)

Applications Accepted: January 20 - March 15

Scholarship funds are provided to assist Honors students finishing their junior year, with the funding to be used in their senior year. Students must have an outstanding academic record while demonstrating leadership in co-curricular activities within their school and community. This award is for students with demonstrated good character, intellectual ability, breadth of interest, and community leadership. Students will write a brief essay addressing their involvement in community leadership.

Jeff Metcalf Memorial Scholarship

Award: One award in the amount of $1,000 (tuition-based; no cash award received)

Applications Accepted: January 20 - April 7

Established by the Honors College community, in memory of Professor Jeff Metcalf to commemorate his lifetime of extraordinary teaching. Jeff served as the director of the English Teaching major. This scholarship fund celebrates Jeff’s life by supporting the next generation of teachers. This scholarship will be awarded to an Honors College student working on a teaching degree.

Jerry And Terry Debenham Scholarship

Award: One award in the amount of $3,000 (tuition-based; no cash award received)

Applications Accepted: January 20 - March 15

The Jerry and Terry Debenham Scholarship is to be awarded to a rising junior or senior Honors student who is majoring in one of the following majors: Accounting, Architectural Studies, Atmospheric Sciences, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Materials Science and Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Metallurgical Engineering, and Mining Engineering.

Joshua M. Dalton Honors Housing Scholarship

Award: One award in the amount of $7,500 (Honors housing on campus required; no cash award received)

Students who apply for Honors housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

Established by Joshua M. Dalton, a graduate of the Honors College and a member of the National Honors Advisory Board. Josh is dedicated to helping students succeed in their remarkable academic, professional, and personal goals. He believes in the value of community created by on-campus housing. This scholarship will provide housing assistance to one first-generation student, in their first year, who is living in Honors housing.

Kenneth Browning Handley Scholarship

Award: One award in the amount of $10,000 (tuition-based; no cash award received)

Deadline: January 20 - March 15

The Kenneth Browning Handley Scholarship honors the memory of Kenneth B. Handley who, at the time of his death in December 1982, was a student at the University of Utah majoring in chemistry and mathematics. Ken was an outstanding student and had a great curiosity about the world and broad interests in literature, philosophy, and music. He was an accomplished clarinetist and was mature, respectful, and compassionate in his dealings with others. He was a loyal friend and exemplary older brother. Funding is to be awarded to a rising junior or senior who demonstrates good character, intellectual ability, and breadth of interest and seriousness of purpose through a personal essay. Recipient must be working towards completion of the thesis degree.

King Family Scholarship

Award: Two awards in the amount of $5,000 (no cash award received)

Students who apply for Honors housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

Established by W. Patrick and Florence King, who desire to support the exceptional students in the Honors College. This scholarship is for a first-generation Honors College student. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated a commitment to completing their Honors degree.

Lear Family Scholarship

Award: One award in the amount of $1,000 (tuition-based; no cash award received)

Applications Accepted: January 20 - March 15

Established by Jon and Phillip Lear in honor of their parents, Frank L. and Dorothy Pond Lear. Scholarship funds are to be awarded to an outstanding junior or senior in the Honors College who demonstrates tangible skill and interest in their chosen field of study, and is committed to attaining an Honors degree (thesis completion) with high academic standing. Applicants must provide a brief plan of their desired thesis topic and a short response to how they are currently engaged in their field of study outside the classroom.

Martha Bradley-Evans Fellow Award

Award: One award in the amount of $5,000 (tuition-based; no cash award received)

Applications Accepted: January 20 - March 15

The Martha Bradley-Evans Fellow Award was established in 2013 by friends, family, colleagues, and former students in recognition of her service as Dean of the Honors College. Dr. Bradley served as Dean from 2002 until her appointment as Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Undergraduate Studies in 2011. Scholarship funds will be awarded to a student who is passionate about and works on behalf of issues of social justice and community engagement demonstrated in a brief essay. Applicants must be a rising junior or senior who demonstrate tangible skills in their chosen field of study, and commitment to attaining the Honors degree with high academic standing.

Martin H. Hiatt Endowed Scholarship

Award: Three awards in the amount of $2,000 (tuition-based; no cash award received)

Applications Accepted: January 20 - April 7

Established by a generous donation in 1992 from the Martin H. Hiatt estate, this scholarship is awarded to a rising senior who is committed to completing the Honors degree. Students must demonstrate they are working towards thesis completion and are actively involved in the Honors College by attaching a list of courses completed, areas where they have been involved in the Honors College, and a completed thesis proposal form.

McIntyre-Smith Endowed Scholarship

Award: One award in the amount of $3,000 (tuition-based; no cash award received)

Applications Accepted: January 20 - March 15

Established by Jerilyn McIntyre and David Smith, this scholarship is awarded to an Honors College student demonstrating in priority order: scholarly achievement, leadership contributions, and financial need. Preference will be given to students who meet all three of the criteria.

Sweet Candy Company Endowed Scholarship

Award: Eight awards in the amount of $2,125 per student. (tuition-based; no cash award received)

Applications Accepted: January 20 - April 7

The Sweet Candy Company is a fifth-generation family-owned and operated business that was established in 1892 in Portland, Oregon and relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1900. The Sweet Candy Company Endowed Scholarship was established in 1989 by L. Jack Sweet, and Corrine H. Sweet to provide scholarships for outstanding Honors students who are rising juniors committed to completing their Honors degree. Applicants must demonstrate participation in the Honors College and provide a brief plan of their desired thesis topic.

Tadd Menlove Endowed Memorial Scholarship

Award: One award in the amount of $1,000 (tuition-based; no cash award received)

Applications Accepted: January 20 - March 15

The Tadd Menlove Endowed Memorial Scholarship was established in 2017 by close family and friends. Tadd lived a rich and full life, entering the Honors College in 2008 and graduating with a degree in Business in 2012. Scholarship funds are for actively participating Honors students. Preference will be given to a first-generation college student.

Thomas N. Parks and Patricia Legant Scholarship

Award: One Award in the amount of $10,000 (no cash award received)

Applications Accepted: January 20 - March 15

Donated in honor of Thomas N. Parks, PhD and Patricia Legant, MD, PhD. This scholarship is awarded for tuition or Honors housing to a student who is majoring in the sciences, demonstrates academic excellence, and who has demonstrated a commitment to using science to improve the lives of others.

Tina And Daniel Zvonek Honors Housing Scholarship

Award: Two awards in the amount of $5,000 (Honors housing on campus required; no cash award received)

Students who apply for Honors housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

Established by Tina and Daniel Zvonek, who are committed to making it possible for a student to live on campus and be part of an enriched living and learning community. This scholarship fund will provide housing assistance to one first-generation student, in their first year, who is living in Honors College housing.

Troy Lindquist Honors Scholarship

Award: One award in the amount of $5,000 (Honors housing on campus required; no cash award received)

Students who apply for Honors housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

Established by Kristy Lindquist in honor of her late husband, Troy Lindquist. Kristy is a member of the National Honors Advisory Board, and shares a belief in the value and experience of the enriched living and learning environment in the Honors College housing. This scholarship will provide housing assistance to one first-generation student, in their first year, who is living in Honors College housing.

Phyllis and Rusty Vetter Honors Humanities Endowed Scholarship

Award: One award in the amount of $1,000 (tuition-based; no cash award received)

Applications Accepted: January 20 - April 7

Established by Phyllis (’84) and Rusty Vetter (’82) this scholarship is for rising juniors and seniors pursuing an Honors Bachelor’s Degree in the humanities. This scholarship is intended to bring focus to the humanities because they enhance our understanding of the human experience and our ability to think critically and creatively about our diverse, complicated and fast-changing world. Preference will be given to students who are pursuing a career in education.
