Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Scholarship
Funding for an academic year or summer for graduate and undergraduate study of underrepresented language
The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Scholarship provides funding for graduate or undergraduate students for study of underrepresented languages during an academic year or a summer fellowship. The University of Utah receives an allocation of fellowships from the U.S. Department of Education each year for FLAS. The scholarship covers up to $18,000 for graduate students and up to $10,000 for undergraduate students for tuition for an academic year. The estimated institutional payment for summer fellowships is up to $5,000 for graduate and undergraduate students. FLAS covers a living stipend for up to $15,000 for graduate students and up to $5,000 for undergraduate students for the academic year and up to $2,500 for graduate and undergraduate students for summer fellowships.

Eligibility:
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Current or incoming full-time student at the University of Utah
- Undergraduate applicants must be at least a 2nd year proficiency of a less commonly taught language while receiving FLAS
- Graduate students may be eligible to take 1st year language courses as long as they can show proficiency in another language of the region
- Take a language course and area studies course while receiving FLAS
- Approved languages
- Arabic
- Cambodian (Khmer)
- Chinese
- Hindi-Urdu
- Japanese
- Korean
- Persian
- Russian
- Vietnamese
- Nahuatl
- Portuguese
- Quechua
- Other languages may be eligible during summer semester through intensive language programs
- Approved languages
