Scholarships


Scholarship applications for the 2025–2026 academic year will open February 1, 2025 – April 5, 2025. Below, you’ll find a list of available scholarship opportunities.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be Honors College students.
  • Students must enroll full-time (at least 12 credit hours) at the University of Utah.
  • Applicants must actively pursue completion of the Honors degree.

How to Apply:

Important Details:

  • Scholarships for current students are distributed over two semesters and applied directly to your tuition account. Cash awards are not provided.
  • Recipients of housing scholarships must reside in Honors College Housing.
  • If you withdraw from the Honors College, any awarded scholarships will be rescinded.

C. Charles Hetzel III Endowed Scholarship

Award: One award of $10,000

Applications Accepted: February 1 - April 5

This scholarship was established by C. Charles Hetzel III to provide educational assistance through scholarship. Preference will be given to a U.S. citizen who is a deserving nonresident student enrolled in the Honors College and who demonstrates high academic achievement.

Charles W. and Sharee Sorenson Honors Scholarship

Award: One award of $1,000 for a first-year student with continued support for awardees increasing by $1,000 each year. First year- $1,000, Second- $2,000, Third- $3,000, Fourth- $4,000. Students must remain active in Honors and in good standing for continued support.

Students who apply for Honors housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

This scholarship was established by Charles W. Sorenson, Jr., a graduate of the Honors College, and his wife, Sharee Sorenson. Charles and Sharee are committed to making it possible for students to have an enriched Honors College experience. This scholarship is eligible for a first-year student committed to completing an Honors College degree. It is renewable each year for up to four years, with increased support each year. Funding can be used for tuition or Honors College Housing.

Clara And Olivia Randall Housing Scholarship

Award: One award of $7,500

Students who apply for Honors housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

The Clara and Olivia Randall Housing Scholarship was established by President Taylor Randall and his daughters, Clara and Olivia, all graduates of the Honors College. Clara and Olivia are passionate about the enriched environment Honors College Housing communities provide to the Honors experience. This scholarship will assist one student living in Honors College Housing.

Darke Honors Essay Award

Award: One award of $1,500

Applications Accepted: February 1 - April 5

The Darke Honors Essay Award was established in honor of Roy A. Darke, Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Recipients must be a rising junior or senior Honors student majoring in psychology. Students wishing to be considered for this award will write a brief essay addressing the following prompt: “Discuss the relationship between medicine and either the behavioral sciences or humanities.”

David A. Robinson Scholarship

Award: One award of $2,000

Applications Accepted: February 1 – April 5

This scholarship was established by Christopher Robinson (HBA ’86) in honor of his father, David A. Robinson. Their family has been honored for the privilege of attending the University of Utah. This scholarship will be awarded to an Honors Business student who has demonstrated financial need and is committed to the Honors College degree. Christopher Robinson believes in the benefit of a liberal honors education in business.

Duane Harris Butcher Endowed Scholarship

Award: One award of $2,500

Applications Accepted: February 1 - April 5

The Duane Harris Butcher Scholarship, established in 2002 by Bethann Butcher Martin, is for Honors College students who are descendants of the Utah pioneers who emigrated from 1847-1897. Applicants will demonstrate appreciation for their heritage and community through a one-page essay. Photos or additional materials supporting your relationship with Utah pioneers are welcomed and encouraged.

Fairchild Martindale Honors Housing Scholarship

Award: One award of $5,000

Students who apply for Honors housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

The Fairchild Martindale Foundation’s generous funding provides a housing scholarship to an Honors student living in Honors College Housing who would not otherwise be able to live on campus financially.

Florence J. Gillmor Foundation Housing Scholarships

Award: 10 awards for varying amounts based on need

Students who apply for Honors College Housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

Established by the Florence J. Gillmor Foundation, whose generous funding for student housing provides the opportunity for students who have earned their place in Honors to broaden their education by fully immersing themselves in Honors and University communities. This scholarship fund will provide housing assistance to ten students demonstrating financial need who are living in Honors College Housing.

Gordon and Connie Hanks Scholarship

Award: One award of $2,500

Applications Accepted: February 1 - April 5

Gordon and Connie Hanks have been involved in the University of Utah since Gordon’s graduation in 1967. Gordon and Connie have been involved in the College of Fine Arts, the College of Music, and the Athletic Department, providing scholarships and other support. They also have created and grown the JazzSLC/GAM Foundation, a nonprofit Jazz series in Salt Lake City. Connie is an active member of the National Honors Advisory Board. Gordon and Connie generously created an Honors College Scholarship fund in 2021. Applicants must be rising juniors or seniors majoring in Fine Arts and demonstrate commitment to attaining the Honors College degree with high academic standing.

Herbert I. and Elsa B. Michael Foundation Honors Scholarship

Award: Two awards of $2,125

Applications Accepted: February 1 – April 5

The Herbert I. and Elsa B. Michael Foundation provides scholarships to two first-year honors students who are first-generation college students.

Honors Housing Scholarship - Anonymous Funder

Award: One award of $5,000

Students who apply for Honors College Housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

Established by a generous, anonymous donor, this funding will provide scholarship housing assistance to one student demonstrating financial need who is living in Honors College Housing.

Honors Housing Scholarship - Anonymous Funder

Award: Multiple awards of varying amounts based on need

Students who apply for Honors College Housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

Established by a generous, anonymous donor, this funding will provide scholarship housing assistance to one student demonstrating financial need who is living in Honors College Housing.

Honors College Pride Scholarship

Award: One award of $2,000

Applications Accepted: February 1 - April 5

The Honors College Pride Scholarship, established in 2019, will be awarded to a student studying in either Humanities or Social and Behavioral Science. Preference will be given to students with a demonstrated commitment to the LGBTQ community. Applicants will provide a one-page essay addressing the question, ”How will support for your individual academic journey further the needs/interests of the LGBTQ+ community?”

James B. & Betty Debenham Scholarship

Award: One award of $2,500

Applications Accepted: February 1 - April 5

A generous gift from the trust of Betty Debenham established this scholarship in honor of James B. Debenham for rising juniors and seniors who are completing the Honors College degree. Applicants must demonstrate participation in the Honors College and provide a plan of their desired thesis topic or attach the thesis proposal form.

James L. Clayton Honors Housing Scholarship

Award: One award of $5,000

Students who apply for Honors College Housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

Kitty Swenson established the James L. Clayton Honors Housing Scholarship in honor of her father, James L. Clayton, the second Director of the Honors College, Dean of the Graduate School, and University Provost. This scholarship fund will provide housing assistance to one first-generation student in their first year who is living in Honors College Housing.

James N. Kimball Scholarship

Award: One award of $1,000

Applications Accepted: February 1 – April 5

This scholarship was created in memory of beloved Honors Professor James N. Kimball, who was a businessman, historian, armchair politician, author, and storyteller. In his memory, a scholarship is awarded to a student who exhibits academic excellence and a commitment to the community.

James Svendsen Endowed Scholarship

Award: One award of $3,500

Applications Accepted: February 1 - April 5

Established by James Svendsen, this scholarship is for an Honors College junior or senior pursuing a degree in Theater or Classics. James Svendsen is a Professor Emeritus in Classics at the University of Utah and enjoyed teaching and working with Honors College students.

Janice R. Ugaki And R. Douglas Greally Outstanding Honors Student Scholarship

Award: One award of $1,000

Applications Accepted: February 1 - April 5

Scholarship funds are provided to assist Honors students finishing their junior year, with the funding to be used in their senior year. Students must have an outstanding academic record while demonstrating leadership in co-curricular activities within their school and community. This award is for students with demonstrated good character, intellectual ability, breadth of interest, and community leadership. Students will write a brief essay addressing their involvement in community leadership.

Jeff Metcalf Memorial Scholarship

Award: One award of $2,000

Applications Accepted: February 1 - April 5

The Honors College community established this scholarship in memory of Professor Jeff Metcalf to commemorate his lifetime of extraordinary teaching. Jeff served as the director of the English Teaching major. This scholarship fund celebrates Jeff’s life by supporting the next generation of teachers. This scholarship will be awarded to an Honors College student working on a teaching degree.

Jerry And Terry Debenham Scholarship

Award: One award of $3,000

Applications Accepted: February 1 - April 5

The Jerry and Terry Debenham Scholarship is to be awarded to a rising junior or senior Honors student who is majoring in one of the following majors: Accounting, Architectural Studies, Atmospheric Sciences, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Materials Science and Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Metallurgical Engineering, and Mining Engineering. Preference given to a student with demonstrated interest in Artificial Intelligence.

Joshua and Holly Dalton Honors Housing Scholarship

Award: One award in the amount of $7,382

Students who apply for Honors College Housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

This scholarship was established by Joshua M. Dalton, a graduate of the Honors College and a member of the National Honors Advisory Board. Josh is dedicated to helping students succeed in their remarkable academic, professional, and personal goals. He believes in the value of the community created by on-campus housing. This scholarship will provide housing assistance to one student in their first year who is living in Honors College Housing.

Karen Hinckley Campbell Honors Scholarship

Award: One award of $5,000

Applications Accepted: February 1 – April 5

Karen Hinckley Campbell lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, for over 60 years and was a lifelong supporter of the University of Utah’s multiple community and philanthropic activities. This scholarship will be awarded to an Honors College student with demonstrated financial need. Awarded funds may be used for tuition or Honors College Housing assistance.

Kenneth Browning Handley Scholarship

Award: One award of $9,000

Deadline: February 1 - April 5

The Kenneth Browning Handley Scholarship honors the memory of Kenneth B. Handley, who, at the time of his death in December 1982, was a student at the University of Utah majoring in chemistry and mathematics. Ken was an outstanding student with great curiosity about the world and broad interests in literature, philosophy, and music. He was an accomplished clarinetist and was mature, respectful, and compassionate in his dealings with others. He was a loyal friend and an exemplary older brother. Funding is to be awarded to a rising junior or senior who demonstrates good character, intellectual ability, breadth of interest, and seriousness of purpose through a personal essay. The recipient must be working towards completion of the thesis degree.

King Family Scholarship

Award: Two awards of $5,000

Students who apply for Honors housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

W. Patrick and Florence King, who desire to support the exceptional students in the Honors College, established this scholarship to provide housing assistance to two students with financial needs who are living in Honors College Housing. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated a commitment to completing their Honors College degree.

Larry and Amy Gelwix Honors Scholarship

Award: One award of $5,000

Applications Accepted: February 1 – April 5

Established by Larry and Amy Gelwix, both 2002 graduates of the University of Utah, with gratitude for their experiences at the University, this scholarship will provide tuition or Honors College Housing assistance to a student demonstrating high academic and professional potential who has demonstrated financial need.

Lear Family Scholarship

Award: One award of $1,000

Applications Accepted: February 1 - April 5

Jon and Phillip Lear established the Lear Family Scholarship in honor of their parents, Frank L. and Dorothy Pond Lear. Scholarship funds will be awarded to an outstanding junior or senior in the Honors College who demonstrates tangible skill and interest in their chosen field of study and is committed to attaining an Honors College degree with high academic standing. Applicants must provide a brief plan of their desired thesis topic and a short response to how they are currently engaged in their field of study outside the classroom.

Martha Bradley-Evans Fellow Award

Award: One award of $5,000

Applications Accepted: February 1 - April 5

The Martha Bradley-Evans Fellow Award was established in 2013 by friends, family, colleagues, and former students in recognition of her service as Dean of the Honors College. Dr. Bradley served as Dean from 2002 until she was appointed Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Undergraduate Studies in 2011. Scholarship funds will be awarded to a student who is passionate about and works on behalf of issues of social justice and community engagement, as demonstrated in a brief essay. Applicants must be rising juniors or seniors who demonstrate tangible skills in their chosen field of study and commitment to attaining the Honors College degree with high academic standing.

Martha Bradley-Evans Housing Scholarship

Award: Multiple awards of varying amounts based on need

Honors College students attending the University of Utah Asia Campus summer program will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

This scholarship was established by Martha Bradley-Evans, who desires to support honors students with housing assistance.

Martin H. Hiatt Endowed Scholarship

Award: Four awards of $2,000

Applications Accepted: February 1 - April 5

Established by a generous donation in 1992 from the Martin H. Hiatt estate, this scholarship is awarded to a rising senior committed to completing the Honors College degree. Students must demonstrate they are working towards thesis completion and are actively involved in the Honors College by attaching a list of courses completed, areas where they have been involved in the Honors College, and a completed thesis proposal form.

McIntyre-Smith Endowed Scholarship

Award: One award of $2,500

Applications Accepted: February 1 - April 5

Established by Jerilyn McIntyre and David Smith, this scholarship is awarded to an Honors College student demonstrating in priority order: scholarly achievement, leadership contributions, and financial need. Preference will be given to students who meet all three of the criteria.

Phyllis and Rusty Vetter Honors Humanities Endowed Scholarship

Award: One award of $2,500

Applications Accepted: February 1 - April 5

Established by Phyllis (’84) and Rusty Vetter (’82), this scholarship is for rising juniors and seniors pursuing an Honors Bachelor’s Degree in the humanities. It is intended to bring focus to the humanities because they enhance our understanding of the human experience and our ability to think critically and creatively about our diverse, complicated, and fast-changing world. Preference will be given to students who are pursuing a career in education.

R. Anthony Sweet Fund for Housing Assistance for Honors College Students in Their Second, Third, or Fourth Years

Award: 10+ awards in varying amounts based on need

Students who apply for Honors College Housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

Established by R. Anthony Sweet, whose generous funding for student housing provides the opportunity for students who have earned their place in the Honors College to broaden their education by fully immersing themselves in Honors and University communities. This scholarship fund will provide housing assistance to ten students who demonstrate financial need and otherwise would be unable to live on campus in Honors College Housing. Students must be second-, third- or fourth-year Honors College students who have shown a commitment to their Honors College degree and who will be living in Honors College Housing.

Sweet Candy Company Endowed Scholarship

Award: Nine awards of $2,500

Applications Accepted: February 1 - April 5

The Sweet Candy Company is a fifth-generation family-owned and operated business established in 1892 in Portland, Oregon, and relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1900. The Sweet Candy Company Endowed Scholarship was established in 1989 by L. Jack Sweet and Corrine H. Sweet to provide scholarships for outstanding Honors College students who are rising juniors committed to completing their Honors College degree. Applicants must have demonstrated financial need, demonstrate participation in the Honors College, and provide a brief plan of their desired thesis topic.

Tadd Menlove Endowed Memorial Scholarship

Award: One award of $1,000

Applications Accepted: February 1 - April 5

The Tadd Menlove Endowed Memorial Scholarship was established in 2017 by close family and friends. Tadd lived a rich and full life, entering the Honors College in 2008 and graduating with a degree in Business in 2012. Scholarship funds are for actively participating Honors students. Preference will be given to a first-generation college student.

Thomas N. Parks and Patricia Legant Scholarship

Award: One award of $10,000

Applications Accepted: February 1 - April 5

Donated in honor of Thomas N. Parks, PhD and Patricia Legant, MD, PhD, this scholarship will be awarded for tuition or Honors College Housing to a student who is majoring in the sciences, demonstrates academic excellence, and has shown a commitment to using science to improve the lives of others.

Tina and Daniel Zvonek Honors Housing Scholarship

Award: Two awards of $5,000 or one award of $10,000

Students who apply for Honors College Housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

Tina and Daniel Zvonek, committed to making it possible for a student to live on campus and be part of an enriched living and learning community, established this scholarship fund to provide housing assistance to students in their first year living in Honors College Housing.

Troy Lindquist Honors Scholarship

Award: One award of $5,000

Students who apply for Honors College Housing through the Housing U application will automatically be considered. Direct applications are not accepted.

Kristy Lindquist established this scholarship in honor of her late husband, Troy Lindquist. Kristy is a member of the National Honors Advisory Board and shares a belief in the value and experience of the enriched living and learning environment in Honors College Housing. This scholarship will provide housing assistance to one student in their first year who is living in Honors College Housing.
